GIRLS WHO ROCK: Mission Statement

Girls Who ROCK (Recognizing Our Collective Karma) is a Chilliwack Basketball Association program dedicated to growing girls’ basketball in our city by building confidence, connection, skill, and a lifelong love of the game. Using basketball as a vehicle to increase physical literacy, we aim to equip girls with the tools to become strong, capable, and empowered both on and off the court.

Our initiatives will include school-based programming, afterschool sessions, monthly Friday Night Jamborees, and weekend celebrations—creating fun, consistent, and inclusive opportunities for girls to play, grow, and thrive in sport and community.

GIRLS IN SPORT: WHY IT MATTERS
Information for Parents | Chilliwack Basketball Association – Girls Who ROCK

🚨 The Reality in CanadaUnfortunately, the research is clear:
  • Girls participate in sports less than boys.
According to Canadian Women & Sport, girls across Canada are consistently less involved in sports than boys.
  • 1 in 3 girls drop out of sports in adolescence
Compared to only 1 in 10 boys, girls leave sports at a much higher rate as they enter their teen years.
  • By adolescence, participation rates drop by 22%
School-based sports drop off even more sharply, falling nearly 26% for girls during these years (Canadian Lifestyles and Research Institute, 2013).
  • Few girls meet daily physical activity guidelines
A very small percentage of girls get the recommended daily activity needed for health and wellness.

💪🏽 Why This MattersParticipating in sports helps girls:
  • Build confidence
  • Improve mental and physical health
  • Learn teamwork and leadership
  • Develop physical literacy (fundamental movement and sport skills)
Girls who stay in sports are more likely to lead active, healthy lives and feel empowered in other areas—like school, work, and relationships.
